JKL Lady Dolphins are the Zone 5 Champions following a convincing 62-53 win over defending champions Equity Bank Hawks in the final at the National Indoor Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Friday night.
The Lady Dolphins trailed 17-11 after the opening ten minutes but limited their Kenyan opponents to just 4 points in the second.
They scored 17 of their own to lead 28-21 at half time.
Equity came back into the game in the third quarter but JKL captain Flavia Oketcho hit big shots to keep her side in control of proceedings.
JKL had a five-point lead going into the final frame of the game and this stretched to 12 midway the fourth quarter.
The Ugandan side would hold on for victory to bring the title home on their first-ever Zonal outing.
Oketcho scored game-high 15 points to lead JKL while Brenda Ekone came off the bench to post 14 points. Hope Akello and Zainah Lokwameri contributed 10 points apiece.
Kenyan international veteran Betty Mjomba was the only Equity player to score in double figures with 12 points as the defending champions surrendered the title.
Oketcho, who is the Uganda Gazelles’ captain and the most experienced player on the team, was named as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
With this victory, the Lady Dolphins have qualified for the FIBA Africa Women’s Champions Cup.
The 2019 edition is set to be held at Palais des Sports Mahamasima in Antananarivo, Madagascar December 6-15.
