Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) has been confirmed as the host for the FIBA Africa U18 Zone Five Preliminaries.
In a 10th February letter to the federation, FIBA Africa Secretary General Alphonse Bile, confirmation for this was made.
“Following the information that we received from the Zone V board, I have the pleasure to inform you that your country is assigned the organization of the 2020preliminaries FIBA Africa U18 for men & women, zone V.” read part of the letter.
The event is set to run from 1st-6th June 2020 in Kampala with different Zone 5 teams expected to come and compete.
FUBA president Nasser Sserunjogi revealed that it is a big opportunity for Uganda to show how organized and hospitable this country is.
“We are excited as a federation and so should every Ugandan out there,” he said after receiving the confirmation letter.
“This is a chance to show off our country by putting up a good show as we host our brothers and sisters from other countries.” He added.
“Our main objective is to develop the game from grassroots level and our focus is going to be mainly on youth structures and tournaments,”
“Hosting this tournament at home and playing before our home crowd should also give us a big chance to qualify for Afrobasket,”
“Our boys and girls will play better with the support of our fans and the government.”
Uganda was applauded for hosting a successful FIBA Africa 3X3 Championship in Kampala last year.
The two Ugandan teams will be looking to use home-court advantage to progress to the continental championship.
